Backcheck is an independent hockey analytics publication. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the National Hockey League, the NHL Players' Association, or any NHL club. Team and player names, city names and abbreviations appear for the purpose of identification and commentary only. We display no league or club logos, marks or crests.

Scores, schedules, standings and play-by-play data come from the NHL's publicly available data feeds. Season statistics, shift charts and rosters come from the same public feeds. Expected goals, win probabilities, grades and rankings are computed by our own models from that data — no third-party analytics provider is involved; the method and validation pages describe how, and the glossary defines every term.

Numbers can be wrong. Feeds change, games are corrected after the fact, and models are estimates. We publish provenance on every figure and correct errors when we find them, but we make no warranty of accuracy or completeness.

Previews and recaps are drafted automatically from the computed numbers and may be edited for clarity by a language model under rules that forbid adding, changing or re-attributing any number, name or result. Every piece carries a “By the model” byline that says so, with the model version and the time it was written. Pieces written by a person are labelled “Written”.

Win probabilities, projections and every other number on this site are analysis for readers who love the game. They are not betting lines, not tips, and not a recommendation to wager on anything. We are not a licensed advisor of any kind. Backcheck takes no wagers, sells no picks, and carries no sportsbook advertising or affiliate links. We are not licensed by, registered with, or paid by any gambling operator, and we do not compare our numbers to betting lines. Nothing on this site is directed at people under the legal gambling age in their jurisdiction.

The writing, graphics, models and design of Backcheck are ours. You may quote short excerpts with a link and credit; you may not republish articles, scrape the site at scale, or present our numbers as your own. Photographs are either generated or contributed under the terms listed on the picture credits page, and remain the property of their photographers.
