Hurricanes run the Islanders off the ice on the underlying numbers
The Hurricanes earned it — the game and the expected-goals battle both.
The underlying story
The Hurricanes' 6-2 victory overstates their dominance. They controlled 62% of expected goals (5.28–3.20) — a clear edge, but the final margin was inflated by luck: the Islanders underperformed their xG by 1.20, the Hurricanes overperformed by 0.72, a two-goal swing that transformed a close underlying contest into a rout.
The play-by-play shows why. Carolina held 55% of shot attempts (34–28) and converted rush chances with precision: four goals on 31 attempts. New York generated chances but couldn't finish — zero on five high-danger chances, the kind of binary outcome that cuts both ways.
Goaltending amplified the gap. B. Bussi stopped 1.2 goals above expected while denying all five high-danger attempts. D. Rittich surrendered 0.72 goals more than the model predicted — neutral variance in a high-volume night, not a failure. One benefited, one didn't.
Rebound creation revealed intent. Carolina generated seven rebounding opportunities and converted two; New York had four and converted none. That gap tracks with Carolina's net-crashing approach, a deliberate strategy that generates second chances. New York crashed too, but never capitalized.
The underlying play favored Carolina clearly. The scoreboard simply amplified the difference.
