Vancouver stole this game. The Canucks won 4-2 despite surrendering 3.94 expected goals to Minnesota's 2.84. They controlled just 42% of the shot quality battle at 5v5; the Wild's 58% dominance should have produced a victory, not a loss.

Goaltending decided it. N. Tolopilo (VAN) saved 1.94 goals above expected, turning away all seven high-danger chances on a perfect night. J. Wallstedt (MIN) fell 1.16 short of par. That gap—elite versus below-average—is the entire game.

The Canucks finished where it mattered. They scored three goals from low-danger areas and were lethal off the rush, converting three of 24 chances. Minnesota shot better, controlled play, and still couldn't convert: 0-for-7 on high-danger chances, 2-for-33 on rush attempts. The Wild created quality; Vancouver executed.

The turning point came midway through the third when M. Zuccarello fired a wrist shot from the top of the circles, extending the deficit. But that goal merely marked when Minnesota's superior structure finally broke. They had already wasted their edge.

This was execution and goaltending beating underlying metrics—a reminder that xG is predictive, not destiny. The scoreboard says Canucks 4, Wild 2. The underlying data said Minnesota should have run away with this one. They didn't.

Minnesota sits at 54%, with models projecting a 2.7–2.4 Wild win. A closer match doesn't exist.

The Wild are the better team on paper. Minnesota has posted an 8–1–1 record over their last ten while Vancouver has cratered at minus-10 in goal differential. More telling: Minnesota's 52.0% 5v5 expected goals share versus Vancouver's 44.0% shows which team dominates even-strength play. Vancouver's PDO of 0.974 reveals they're running cold—positive regression is overdue.

The catch is Minnesota's goaltending situation. F. Gustavsson plays on a back-to-back, which likely means either a backup start or a fatigued Gustavsson. Vancouver, by contrast, has three full days of rest between games.

Where Minnesota makes its money: Matt Boldy produces at 0.89 expected goals per 60 with 22 goals and 18 assists, posting a 13.7% shooting percentage and five high-danger chances. Robby Fabbri (0.88 xG/60, 2G, 3A, 1 HD goal) is likely inactive, which matters. For Vancouver, Filip Chytil (1.03 xG/60, 3G, 0A, 1 HD goal) carries scoring pressure at 15.0% shooting, and Drew O'Connor (0.85 xG/60, 13G, 11A, 3 HD goals, 11.8% shooting) offers secondary options.

Defensively, Vancouver's Victor Mancini and Minnesota's Matt Kiersted are vulnerable. Minnesota should hunt those matchups. But Vancouver's rest window and an unfresh Gustavsson against a team due for positive outcomes make this exactly what the model says: a genuine coin flip.
