Utah dominated expected goals at 57%, but Colorado won 4-2 anyway—this was a theft.

The Mammoth controlled 30 shot attempts to 26, and the xG model gave them 4.53 to Colorado's 3.36. High-danger chances favored Utah 7-5. By every underlying metric, they should have won. They didn't, because S. Wedgewood was immovable.

Wedgewood stopped 28 of 30 shots (0.933 save percentage) and finished 2.53 goals above expected—a performance that rarely happens. He faced seven high-danger chances and turned away all seven. K. Vejmelka, on the other end, let in 0.64 more goals than his xG model predicted. That swing, 2.53 goals each direction, decided the game.

Utah's execution in high-danger areas collapsed. They went 0 for 7 on their clearest looks. Colorado, by contrast, was clinical in transition: they scored four goals on just 20 rush chances, a rate Utah couldn't match at 2 on 27. Martin Necas's slap shot from the top of the circles (second period, 17:17) marked the inflection point—the moment where underlying dominance couldn't stop the scoreboard.

The Mammoth earned this loss through possession and positioning. They created more rebounds, maintained better control, sustained pressure. But generating chances without converting them is just a prettier way to lose. This is precisely the game where one goalie steals a win that expected goals promised to someone else.

1.021PDO — luck, not skill1.003

COL holds 6 of 6 process categories — and PDO (1.021 vs 1.003) says COL has run hotter.

Source · MoneyPuck season tables · 5v5

Colorado owns the underlying play—57.0% xG% and 57.0% Corsi%—but Utah has earned recent form at 7-3-0 over their last 10, while the Avalanche sit at -5 goal differential in the same span. The model projects a 2.7-2.6 edge to Denver at 52% win probability. This is as close to a pick'em as you'll find.

The concern for Colorado is regression. Their PDO of 1.021 means they're running hot on conversion; Utah's 1.003 suggests they're performing to expectation. That 57.0% Corsi% edge shows the Avalanche drive territorial tilt, but dominance in volume doesn't guarantee wins when you're overperforming on finish.

Artturi Lehkonen generates 1.11 xG per 60 minutes with 18 goals and 22 assists at 14.9% shooting—elite and sustainable. Ross Colton (1.10 xG/60, 7 goals, 15 assists) carries a 4.9% shooting rate that will improve. Utah counters with Dylan Guenther at 1.02 xG/60 and 28 goals with 15 assists, while Daniil But (1.01 xG/60, 2 goals, 2 assists) has yet to translate volume into output.

Neither team generates high-danger or rebound goals at meaningful rates—both show 0% in those categories. The scoring will come from the volume and quality of looks, where Colorado has the advantage. Nazem Kadri is Denver's defensive liability; Maveric Lamoureux is Utah's. In a game decided by single goals, that matters.

Colorado should win this based on underlying metrics, but Utah's recent form legitimizes their presence. The Avalanche aren't a lock.
