Flames pull away from the Golden Knights
The Flames stole one. They lost the expected-goals battle 5.23–3.78 and won anyway.
The underlying story
Vegas controlled the play. Calgary controlled the scoreboard. The Flames won 6-3 despite the Golden Knights holding 58% of expected goals—a 16-point gap that flips on one number: D. Cooley stopped 2.23 goals above expected.
The story is clean. Vegas generated better chances (5.23 xG to 3.78), but Calgary converted theirs. In high-danger looks, the Flames buried three of six (50%) while Vegas managed zero of seven. One team finished. The other wasted.
The turning point arrived at 19:15 of the first period, when Jonathan Huberdeau's wrist shot from the high slot tilted the ice. By then, A. Schmid had already surrendered three goals on 25 shots—a 0.800 save percentage, 1.22 goals worse than expected.
Vegas's rush efficiency (three goals on 28 chances) matched Calgary's (four on 22). The difference was the net-front game. Calgary created four rebound opportunities and converted two. Vegas created nine and converted none—a chasm that exposes the gap between possession and finishing.
The variance cut both ways: Calgary overperformed its xG by 2.22 goals, Vegas underperformed by 2.23. But one team capitalized.
The danger ladder
