Vegas controlled the game and lost it anyway. The Golden Knights held 54% of shot attempts and 57% of expected goals—3.99 to Buffalo's 3.03—but couldn't finish, and U. Luukkonen closed the door at 29/29.

That xG split tells you Vegas was the better team operationally; the scoreboard tells you it didn't matter. Buffalo didn't need to be dominant. They needed J. Norris's wrist shot from the top of the circles in the third period (19:02) to open it, then one more to seal it. Vegas, meanwhile, went 0/7 on high-danger chances—the most damning stat of the night.

The goaltending gap explains the rest. Luukkonen finished at 1.000 SV%, stopping 3.99 goals above expected—meaning he made saves that would beat a league-average tender. A. Hill (VGK) stopped 2.03 above expected on 23/24 attempts, respectable work that simply couldn't match the Sabres' wall.

Vegas's collapse on quality looks is the real lesson here. They created 7 high-danger chances and converted zero—a failure of finish, not setup. Buffalo's rush game, by contrast, was surgical: 2 goals on 26 attempts. When one team dominates territory but can't score, and the other scores on efficiency, the scoreboard is right.

The season numbers split 33 — no clear process edge — and PDO (1.020 vs 0.983) says BUF has run hotter.

The model projects Vegas at 56% win probability with a scoring expectation of BUF 2.3 - 2.7 VGK. The Golden Knights dominate the underlying play: 54.0% 5v5 xG share against Buffalo's 50.0%, and 52.0% Corsi dominance against 49.0%. That territorial control compounds into shot quality advantage.

Buffalo enters on a hot streak—9-1-0 in their last 10—but that run masks structural advantage for Vegas. The culprit is PDO, the combined metric of shooting percentage and save percentage. Buffalo's sits at 1.020, meaning the Sabres are getting and receiving unsustainable luck. Vegas runs at 0.983, cold despite strong underlying play. Regression will widen the scoring gap: Buffalo's fortunes normalize downward, Vegas's upward.

Jason Zucker anchors Buffalo at 1.07 xG/60 with 14G 14A and 6 high-danger goals at a 15.1% shooting rate. Josh Doan (15G 18A, 1.01 xG/60, 11.5% shooting) provides secondary punch. Vegas counters with Tomas Hertl (5G 17A, 0.88 xG/60, 4.3% shooting) as its offensive engine. Brandon Saad, marked inactive, is removed from Vegas's equation despite his 0.91 xG/60 rate. Both teams sit at 0% high-danger and 0% rebound goal rate. Jack Quinn is Buffalo's defensive weak link; Rasmus Andersson is Vegas's.

Vegas wins on the underlying play and the regression math.
