The scoreboard said blowout; the underlying metrics said otherwise. Winnipeg beat Vegas 4-1 on a night when expected goals split 4.28–3.82 in the Jets' favor—a narrow edge that doesn't explain a three-goal margin. The difference was goaltending, and specifically C. Hellebuyck's wall of a performance.

Hellebuyck posted a 0.963 save percentage, converting 26 of 27 shots into stops and outperforming expected goals against by 2.82—staggering. He was perfect on high-danger chances, stopping all seven. A. Hill answered for Vegas with a 0.850 save percentage, beating expected by 1.28, but the gap between them decided the evening.

The Jets held 44% of shot attempts, though Vegas got 27 shots on goal to Winnipeg's 21. High-danger chances leaned their way too—8 for Winnipeg, 7 for Vegas—but only marginally. Vegas generated quality despite the lopsided scoreline, constructing looks at 0.063 expected goals per shot compared to Winnipeg's 0.084. The underlying game was competitive. Execution wasn't.

Vegas stumbled where it mattered most. The Golden Knights went 0 for 7 on high-danger chances, a drought that won't persist, and created five rebound opportunities they failed to convert despite crashing the net effectively. Winnipeg, by contrast, was ruthless off the rush—four goals from 19 rush chances—and found the net when it mattered.

Mark Scheifele's wrist shot from the high slot at 18:42 of the third period set the tone for Winnipeg's dominance down the stretch.

VGK holds 5 of 6 process categories — and PDO (0.983 vs 0.998) says WPG has run hotter.

Source · MoneyPuck season tables · 5v5

The model projects a 2.5–2.3 Golden Knights victory with Vegas at 54% win probability. This is a genuine toss-up.

Vegas controls the underlying play. The Golden Knights drive 54.0% xG at 5v5 against Winnipeg's 48.0%, and dominate possession at 52.0% Corsi to 49.0%. Expect Vegas to control territory.

But the Knights are running cold. Their PDO sits at 0.983 versus Winnipeg's 0.998—Vegas has left points on the table and should regress toward the mean. A 54% projection already prices in some positive correction.

Winnipeg is struggling. The Jets are -5 in goal differential over their last 10 games. Underlying metrics and actual results have diverged in the wrong direction.

Players to Watch

VGK

  • Brandon Saad (0.91 xG/60, 3G, 6A, 1 HD goal, 4.1% shooting) — listed as likely out
  • Tomas Hertl (0.88 xG/60, 5G, 17A, 1 HD goal, 4.3% shooting)

WPG

  • Nino Niederreiter (0.87 xG/60, 6G, 6A, 3 HD goals, 8.6% shooting)
  • Kyle Connor (0.83 xG/60, 25G, 30A, 2 HD goals, 13.0% shooting)

If Saad sits, Tomas Hertl becomes Vegas's primary creator. Nino Niederreiter carries Winnipeg's secondary scoring; Kyle Connor remains the engine, with 30 assists and a 13.0% shooting rate.

Rasmus Andersson is Vegas's defensive liability. Colin Miller fills the same role for Winnipeg. Both teams registered 0% high-danger goal rates and 0% rebound goal rates this season—an unusual result that reflects tight management of dangerous chances.

Vegas's edges in shot generation and territorial control are real. But PDO regression works both ways. If Winnipeg's luck turns and Vegas's cold spell continues, the Jets pull off the upset. The model's 54% for Vegas is warranted, but only just.
