Dangerous off the rush
6 goals on 28 rush shots worth 3.33 xG.

Split squads and prospects, not the club that will take the ice in October. The shots and grades below describe this game only: nothing here counts toward season records, form, rankings or player numbers.
The Hurricanes shut out the Predators 6-0. They controlled the underlying play (62% of expected goals), but the shutout margin was inflated by exceptional goaltending from B. Bussi and poor play from J. Saros. The four-goal swing in goaltending variance — B. Bussi's +2.28 and J. Saros's -2.32 — turned what should have been a one-goal advantage into a complete blowout.
The Predators held 46% of shot attempts and drew six high-danger chances to Carolina's one. The ice looked dangerous for them. The scoreboard didn't reflect it.
The Hurricanes built their advantage off the rush. They converted six transition chances, a conversion rate that won't sustain, with Andrei Svechnikov's finish from the doorstep (period 3, 19:05) as the turning point. Every rush chance felt like a goal waiting to happen.
J. Blake scored twice and assisted twice. S. Aho recorded two assists, helping set up goals from J. Blake early and Andrei Svechnikov late. N. Ehlers scored and assisted in limited minutes. The power play landed three times on ten attempts, an unsustainable rate.

What the numbers can't tell you. Whether the finishing was luck or skill, why the benches were run the way they were, who was hurt, and anything said in the room. That is the beat's story, and it is worth reading.

The model projects a 3.4–3.1 Hurricanes win with Carolina at 55% to take it. This is as close to a pick'em as the preseason gets.
Carolina owns the underlying play. The Hurricanes control 55.7% of expected goals. They drive 59.1% of shot attempts, establishing territorial dominance that should decide most matchups. But Juuse Saros, Nashville's goaltender, has given up 13.6 more goals than his workload should have allowed through 59 games—a leak that threatens to muddy the picture.
Goaltending splits the difference. J. Annunen, Nashville's starter, has saved 11.5 more goals than expected through 28 games. P. Kochetkov, Carolina's option, has allowed 0.6 more goals than expected in nine games. That gap—12.1 goals worth—gives Annunen's Predators a tangible edge despite Carolina's structural advantage.
Jackson Blake generates 1.20 expected goals per 60 minutes with 14 goals and 31 assists. Logan Stankoven, the other Carolina engine, contributes 1.16 expected goals per 60 with 15 goals, including 13 from high-danger areas. Jonathan Marchessault drives Nashville's attack at 1.01 expected goals per 60, posting seven goals and seven high-danger goals.
The slot is the battleground. Carolina scores 53% of its goals from high-danger areas. P. Kochetkov saves 78.9% of high-danger shots—a gap that invites pressure. Nashville counters with 57% of its goals from the same zones. The Predators score 34 rebound goals, accounting for 22% of their total—a volume that invites Carolina to hunt second chances.
The underlying metrics favor Carolina, and the goaltending favors Annunen. Expect a tight game where whoever controls the slot controls the outcome, and whoever executes closer to that 55% projection takes it.
