Split squads and prospects, not the club that will take the ice in October. The shots and grades below describe this game only: nothing here counts toward season records, form, rankings or player numbers.
Dallas edged Minnesota 2–1 in a game that belonged to the Wild by almost every measure except the scoreboard. The Stars played a heist: they controlled play from behind and turned a hopeless night into a win on the strength of their goaltending and a pair of devastating rush goals.
Minnesota owned this game's foundation. The Wild held 60% of shot attempts and controlled 57% of expected goals, which means Dallas had no right to be holding the lead down the stretch. But C. DeSmith transformed the math. He made 26 saves and stopped 1.94 goals above what the expected-goals model thought he should allow—a goaltender stealing a win by himself.
The Wild's problem was not a shortage of chances: they generated 2.94 expected goals, created three high-danger scoring chances, and played transition defense that leaked rush opportunities all night. They simply could not find the finish. J. Wallstedt faced the moment differently—16 saves on 18 shots, and Minnesota's expected output outpaced what landed in the net by 1.94 goals.
Dallas built its victory on efficiency. R. Faksa struck first from 44 feet on the rush (a 3% chance), and T. Harley's wrist shot from 49 feet (a 1% chance) ended it. Two goals from the kind of dangerous distance that goalies are supposed to stop; that was the game.
What the numbers can't tell you. Whether the finishing was luck or skill, why the benches were run the way they were, who was hurt, and anything said in the room. That is the beat's story, and it is worth reading.

Two things happened in this game: who created the better chances, and who put the puck in the net. They are not the same thing, and this page separates them on purpose.
The one to watch is expected goals— the best single read on who deserved to win. When it disagrees with the scoreboard, that disagreement is usually the story. Nothing here is a projection; every figure is computed from this game's play-by-play. Full glossary →
